What Is Selank? The Anxiolytic Peptide Explained

Selank is the anxiolytic (anxiety-focused) counterpart to Semax — a second peptide from the same Russian neuropeptide research tradition. What the molecule is

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide based on tuftsin, a naturally occurring peptide fragment better known for its role in the immune system. As with Semax, researchers took the active core and added a stabilizing Pro-Gly-Pro tail so the molecule survives longer in the body. The tuftsin origin is why some of Selank's reported effects extend beyond mood into immune signalling.[2]

How it is thought to work

The leading proposed mechanisms center on the brain's calming chemistry:

  • GABA system — the brain's main inhibitory (calming) neurotransmitter; Selank is studied as a modulator of this system, which is also where conventional anti-anxiety drugs act.
  • Monoamines and BDNF — like Semax, it is reported to influence serotonin balance and neurotrophic signalling.
  • Enkephalin stability — Selank is reported to slow the breakdown of the body's own calming peptides.

Notably, the anxiolytic literature suggests these effects without the sedation or dependence associated with benzodiazepines — a key reason the compound drew research interest.

Where the evidence stands

Selank follows the same pattern as Semax: it is an approved medication in Russia with a domestic clinical record, but it is not approved elsewhere, and independent large-scale Western trials are limited. The mechanistic and animal data are consistent and interesting; the global clinical picture is incomplete. Treat it as a well-characterized regional neuropeptide that remains investigational internationally.
